アメリカ北西部にあるオレゴン州のポートランドでコロナウイルスの感染拡大により２０２０年３月中ばに都市封鎖が始まった。
移動に対する厳格な規制があり、自動車はもはや気軽に運転できない状態になった。その状況下でBLM、大規模な山火事、大統領選挙と大きな出来事が次から次へと続いた。都市封鎖が始まってから程なくして機能が剥奪された自動車がとても美しく、そしてシンボリックに自動車社会とは何か、車とは何かのような疑問を反映しているように見え始めた。
単純な移動手段としてだけではなく車によって喚起させられる物事は多岐にわたる。流通手段であり、物欲の具現化であり、エネルギーの問題であり、政治的な表明であり、拡張身体であり、時にはシェルターであり、その他現代文明に関わる多くの事象が車によって喚起させられる。
半径１キロにも満たない自宅からのエリアを中心に移動制限のある中で見えてきた世界。そのような車と、近隣の庭先で丁重に管理されている美しい植物群の並列によって生まれる差違、分断、融合、類似、対比、対立、共存、混在。非日常化された光景が時間の経過とともに動き始め２０２０年３月以前とは違う形で日常化し続けている。
In March 2020, I started making a new series of video loops and photo collages on the radical change in life in our motorized society.
Initially, the significant restrictions on movement meant that cars had been deprived of their function. These cars, unable to move, became symbolic of the particular situation, and I then began to see other aspects to them. The car represents movement, distribution channels; it’s a complete industrial product at the same time it’s an extension of the human body. A beauty supported by human civilization, intellect. Cars are representative of the desire to own things, they are political, decorative, stylish, and a luxury. They symbolize a stance on the environment and the use of energy, consumption, disparity. Additionally, they are a sign of the times, normally representing speed and distance. However, they were deprived of that function under COVID lockdown, and came to represent disfunction.
I have begun to pair these images of automobile with those from my neighborhood “nature”, plant life representing property, life, artificiality, beauty, ripeness, time and death. The top image consumes and oppresses the bottom image, alluding to the fact that nature, and our human experience, will morph into something new. It’s not always clear where the automobile (disfunction) ends and nature (society) begins. At times, the distance between the two images feels miniscule, at times great. This blending means that in looking at the images as one whole, you question your ability to separate the two images appropriately.
